Dentsu Aegis Network
For tonight's seminar, we advertising students were introduced to the vast world of advertising and the many paths, some that we never even knew existed such as Programmatic, Media Buying, Content and so on. The night went on with a speaker from some of the respective branches in the Dentsu Aegis Network, as seen in the intricate image below.
There was so many interesting things we had heard and learnt about. A speaker for Dentsu Mitchell spoke of the work they had done, one in particular that stood out to me was the Interactive Tourist where, in partnership with Google, was able to provide tourists with real time experience on certain places and hot spots. Another clever campaign was raising awareness of the dangers of high temperatures inside vehicles when outside on a hot Summer day. Weathermen on the news would actually announce the scorching temperatures to ensure children aren't left inside the vehicle for long periods of times.
Another speaker spoke of learning new things, and at times, how this industry will challenge you without a moment's notice. He spoke of a time when he was going to get a new client, and his boss sat him down and told him that they only produce digital content, an area in which he knew nothing about. The boss then told him that he had two weeks to not only learn all there is to know about digital, but to produce something great and present it to the client. In that moment, I believe a striking feeling of fear, stress and anxiety would come into play, but also a feeling of excitement. After all, digital is going to take over the world one day, so it'd be best to learn it.
To end with something the Associate Creative Director of StoryLab said, "to make it in Advertising, it's 99% 'no', and 1% 'yes', so you gotta get really really good at rejection."
The most meaningful thing I took from that Seminar was that, we mustn't be afraid to experience and try new things whether it's to do with the digital world, or with dealing with clients and pitching ideas. It's all about learning new things and applying it to future projects.
